Studies show a person who is in an emotional state is much more likely to tell the truth. The reason behind this is the truth comes easy, lies have to be thought out. It is also common for victims to recant statements because they feel pity for their attacker, or to fear retaliation. For these reasons, your first statement will be given more credibility.

The statement you give to police will not be your biggest problem. If you are caught lying under oath, that is perjury and is a felony.Charge for giving false police statement?
Then you'll get to do the five years for a false statement.

Either you tell the truth now or face the consequences later.

You're probably gonna kick an asskickin out of the situation, at the very least.

If you don't tell the truth and this person goes to prison because of you, it might be much worse when he gets out.
I think for something like this, you'll be looking at a fine and probably some probation.

Jails are crowded as it is--they don't need to add Pinnochio to the inmate roster. It's unnecessary tax dollars being wasted.

Fess up, I think you'll be okay.
