    If I say I'm lying, am I telling the truth?


    If I am, I'm lying, so am utterring a falsehood; but if I'm not telling the truth, I am lying and so I am telling the truth.Can I make a statement that is both true and false?
    Well, a statement can be such that one part is true while the other is false.

    I saw you coming and thought you were looking for me.





    I saw you coming is true. I thought you were looking for me is just to progress conversation or could even be false... I might have thought how harried he looks!!

    If you say you are lying, and it is true, then it may be true that you are lying even though if it is true that you are lying then you are lying. So this results in you lying and being honest at the same time. If you say you are lying, and that is a false statement, then you are indeed lying even though you are telling us you are lying which is true. Is that a good enough answer? All I have really done is explained the problem, and the basic answer is yes, you can lie and tell the truth at the same time, based upon your example.

    The elaboration may be the first I've seen that makes the question make less sense. Truth is in the whole statement and it's meaning, the wording doesn't change that.

    How does the officer know it is a false statement.....





    If it is known to be a false statement the person making the statement can be charged with some sort of obstruction. Depending on the offence or reason for the statement the officer would most likely contact the person again for another statement to verify the response or charge them with a known obstruction law, or just charge the person if commiting an offense. If you have a day in court the officer just presents his fact to the Justice.





    The thing is, it would have to be a known false statement and to be obstructing the truth.





    It is a grey area, lawyers do it all the time. As long as the statement can be truthful but yet incomplete in some manner it is still a true statement even tough it may be incorrect.

    The defense will not care as its thier job to clear his name and by tellign the truth you would be doing this. Its the court that will have a problem. If you lied on the stand its called purgery. If you were not under oath you can still get in a little bit of trouble for filing a false complaint. There are 2 things you must do. First you must talk to a lawyer. Second you must find out from that lawyer how to clear your friend(you are morally obligated) while avoiding trouble yourself. Its definitely possible to reach a plea agreement that will let you slide if you clear his/her name. BUt again you must talk to a lawyer.     It is impossible to prove what happens after death to the soul, if indeed a soul actually exists (which also can't be proved). If reincarnation is real, then many of us carry no memories of our past life/lives.     Probably. In Quantum computing, there is something called a ';cat state'; (named after the Schrodinger's Cat problem). In this state, both p and 卢p are true, and thus p %26amp; 卢p is true. (I'm letting p mean ';All the qubits are |0%26gt;).

    What is more, I think quantum logic isn't quite right because they would have to accept (if they accept ~(P or ~P)) logical contradictions.     If the first statement is true it lends credence to the second one. But nowhere does it say that ONLY men have beards, so the third statement doesn't follow.





    If you can put assertions in the first two that cannot be changed you can prove something. But ANY assertion can be questioned (I am not saying all truths are false, but they can be speculated on AS false.)





    So in a given model (not necessarily a real model) any assertion can be deemed false and any proof can be undermined. Sometimes unrealistic models change our view of the real life situation, because they point at some underlying idea which we hadn't considered.





    So knowledge is assumptions based on current information. The world changes and ideas grow and develop.

    for something to be true or false one has to have some initial thing or result to be able to base that on or there is no answer. I don't know that knowledge in this case is proof, or at least you didn't state how that knowledge was gained, it can't come from just opinion. Opinion is not proof. And just like in a courtroom thre can't be heresay. True or False questions are generally just conjecture. Of course in a classroom a teacher would first give out the information, a pat statement and then on a test ask if how the statement was worded matches what was said initially or not, so that's not a real true or false question. In a specialty like philosophy it would be different as you'd be searching for an answer and not just quoting a teacher so you'd need some method of testing to be able to come out first with a statement.
    You can probably do that in certain settings. For instance in a logic course or academically in a certain field. But in the general flow of life there seems to be fewer and fewer accepted truths. It is as if truth (or falsehood) has been mixed and stirred together and smeared out into something of a bell curve. the extremes will be opposing views and in between all the combinations you can imagine. Sometimes I think this is getting worse with all the information now available to us on the internet but really it has always been like this. There is an old adage, ';Even truth creates opposites'; or something like that.





    My approach is this. When I find something to be true or false I keep it to myself. If I try to convince others of my idea of something being true or false it will be attacked and then I will no longer know.





    Wagner expressed this somewhat when he wrote:

    Most employers get a reference via phone call. And all they're supposed to ask is the dates your worked there and reason for leaving. So, are you worried they will say you were terminated?





    I say fake call. Have a friend call your old employer asking for your dates and reason for leaving to see what they say. Just make up a company.
