You can sue him/her in the court of law.A chief of police recently made false statement, about my family in the local town meeting and newspaper.?
Depends on how serious the falsehood. No matter what, you should simply bring it to his attention and ask that he address the public, stating the error and correction. If the falsehood landed someone in jail, you should take it to your District Court of Appeals. Also, if he knew the statement was false beforehand and intended to use it to hurt the reputation of another, you can prosecute for libel.
The policemen are protected pets of politicians. The judiciary in India also is an associate of the police department. The judges take every word of police reports as granted most of the time believing them as sacred. You can not gain much by going to court or talking to higher police officers or writing to politicians or ministers. Perhaps you may get some relief by going to public through newspapers.
you can sue for slander
