12in = 1ft is a true statement. 12 = 1 is a false statement. What distinguishes the 2 statements? ?

Why must they be included in every calculation?12in = 1ft is a true statement. 12 = 1 is a false statement. What distinguishes the 2 statements? ?
The units.

1 ft = 12 in

in = 1/12 ft

therefore 12 in = 12 *1/12 ft = 1 ft12in = 1ft is a true statement. 12 = 1 is a false statement. What distinguishes the 2 statements? ?
Another way to look at it is to make a fraction out of it.

(12 inches / 1 foot) = 1.

But the units don't cancel out, so you can't convert that into (12/1).
no units for the false statement.
Unit of measure.
